Pansy

Flowers ignite the thinking minds with exceptional thoughts. They inspire as well as motivate to go on with the unending fancies of life. William Wordsworth was one such poet who delivered his thoughts and desires in the light of nature. Each flower represented a symbol of life to him. And the fact is relevantly true that nature heals.

Pansy is a violet colored flower which has derived its name from the French word called pensee which denotes thought. There is an interesting addition to this nomenclature, the flower resembles to a human face and in the month of August it appears to be nodding in a thoughtful manner. Thus it is called a 'thought', Pansy. Today the flower has its significance in a variety of symbols related to human mind and thought. Pansies seem to exude a distinctly delicate and aromatic fragrance at early morning and dusk and therefore it delights the senses in every possible manner.

 

Pansy flower is largely grown as a novel garden plant. The beautiful and charming little flower encompasses the capability to drag its admirers towards it. Cultivated on a larger scale as a garden flower, it lasts for almost all season and that's the most prominent reason gardeners love this colorful flower.

Scientifically adored with the term Viola tricolor, the plant belongs to the vast plant family of Violaceae. Highly adaptable, these little charming plants bloom to give beautifully wrapped up flowers in different colors and color combinations. These are annual plants which are planted throughout the year.

The Pansy blossom is a single flower which has five petals, beautifully arranged in a round manner. The flowers may be in single color or a well blended mixture of two colors. A masterpiece of nature and the inventive human mind has successfully originated the flower in a sculpted manner. One can easily find Pansy in almost all colors. The compact plant bears many stems of green color. The leaves are coarsely notched to be oval or heart shaped. The maximum height that the plant reaches is upto 9 inches only.

 

Historical Traces
Pansy is said to have ancestral links with viola, a flower that ages back to 4th century B.C. Viola had originated in continental Europe and were used as a herbal medicine. Later sometime a plant bearing similarities to viola was discovered growing in wild regions, often in open areas. Finders named it wild pansy as it thrived in alpine meadows and rocky surfaces. Wild pansy differed from viola in two significant ways. It stemmed from the ground and branched above the ground whereas viola branched below the ground and was larger in size.

Later Europeans began cultivating both these plants and What we call Pansy today sprouted in Iver, Buckinghamshire in England.


By 1850, gardeners came up with several new varieties of Pansies. And through cross breeding desired traits were also developed and the final version was welcomed by gardeners all over the world.

Countries which have been growing Pansy on a larger scale are Germany, The United States and Japan. today we can easily see and find Pansy in a wide range of colors like pink, rose, orange, blue and many more. Not only this but innovative and advanced breeding has produced varieties which are available in unusual bicolor designs.

However this revolutionary evolution of Pansy has made it a great area of interest to gardeners worldwide.

 

Uses
It is largely cultivated as a garden flower, and for various ornamental purposes.

Latest methods of cross breeding has produced many varieties of Pansy flower which range in varied colors like yellow, gold, orange, purple, violet, red, white, and even black color, which makes this flower a fancy flower for the gardeners and florists.

The fragrant flowers possess a delicate perfume like aroma which soothes the senses. The yellow and blue flower are said to have the best scent. And various perfumists take delight in exuding this aroma in their perfumes.

   

Pansy: A Gardener's Delight
A little knowledge about the plant's thriving conditions guide the cultivators to do the appropriate for the concerned plant. Following are a few tips that might help you decorate your garden with this beautiful flower:

Pansy plant thrives well in sunny or partial sunlight and it needs to be cultivated in well drained soils.

Normally a biennial, the plant produces greenery in the first year and later in the second year starts

blooming with lovely colorful blossoms. however today new varieties flower in the very first year itself. So you need to choose the right hybrid variety.

Although, Pansy is capable of surviving harsh cold as well however it is advisable to cover them with adequate mulch layer to ensure inevitable growth and maximized flowering.

Thorough watering depending on the climatic conditions helps in retaining the essential moisture of the plant roots and thus the plant performs really well.

Pansies are not heat resistant so they need to be planted in a cooler season as cooler environment helps them flourish in the best possible manner.

Pansies are susceptible to various viral and fungal diseases and thus extra care is needed to protect the plant from the impact of these harsh diseases. A few diseases which attack Pansies on a larger basis are:
Stem rot, Leaf spot, Cucumber mosaic virus, mildew, etc. Slugs and snails are the very normal insects which hamper the normal growth of Pansies.
However , timely spray of insecticides and pesticides will definitely scare these ailments away and give your plant a flawless growth.
