Mallow

We synthesize nature's beauty and charm through its representative flowers. Mallow is universally present in different forms, colors and hues and not only generates its presence through the endless beauty and fragrance but also confirms its entity through its utilities.

Mallow is the very common name of an entire genus of flowering plant species. These species belong to the enlarged plant family of Malvaceae. Lets discuss a few of the well known genus and their uses one by one.

   
Abelmoschus
A tropical flowering plant which originated in Africa, Asia and northern Australia, the genus, Abelmoschus is categorized in further fifteen different species. All these species have been scrutinized as annuals and perrenial herbs. These generally climb up to an height of 2m.

The green fleshy, palmate leaves make up for a rich dark foliage. The flowers borne are large and often range in decent colors of white and yellow with a little hint of red or purple color. These flowers give way to a long fruit which bears a number of tiny seeds. Musk Mallow is one of the extremely popular species of this genus.

Uses

  • A few species are known for their edible parts such as the young little pods and green leaves.
 
Althaea
About 10-12 perrenial herb species reign under this genus. Marsh Mallow is on of the well known species. Callirhoe(Poppy Mallow)
Originated in the agricultural lands of North America, Poppy Mallow is a genus which includes about nine annual herb species. A highly adaptable genus, Poppy Mallow plants hardly need any extra care. Hot, humid and waterless climate will do good as well. The saucer shaped flowers range in different colors like purplish violet with a white base. Pale poppy mallow, purple poppy mallow, clustered poppy mallow are the three major species of Poppy Mallow.

Corchorus(Jute Mallow)
A genus plant of Malvaceae, Jute Mallow is a popular flowering plant which is well known for its edible and delicious leaves. Malacothamnus(Bush Mallow)

Malva
One of the major genus of the family of Malvaceae, Malva has registered under its belly more than 30 species, each bearing distinct characteristics. The pink or white colored petals of the large flowers can be seen widespread in the tropical or the sub-tropical regions of the planet.

Malvaviscus
Yet anotherfeather in the cap, Malvaceae is adorned with the genus Malvaviscus which has been categorized in numerous species. The characteristic red colored flowers have fetched names like Turk's Cap mallow, Wax Mallow, Sleeping Hibiscus, and Mazapan to the concerned genus.

Uses

  • This genus of plants is also known for its dark foliage and this makes it a worthy garden plant with adorable large flowers.
  • Checkerblooms and Globe Mallows are also some of the ornamental plants of the large malvaceae family.
  • Abelmoschus manihot (aibika) furnishes cordage like jute, and Abelmoschus moschatus (musk mallow) is grown for musk seeds (musk ambrette, which causes photoallergy).
